Wayne Smith Obituary

Wayne Smith, 99 years and 243 days passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024, after a short illness.  He was born on August 6, 1924, or it could have been August 7, 1924, in Lincoln County, West Virginia to the late Walter and Margie (Hager) Smith.

 

Declared 4-F for WWII, Wayne worked as a civilian at the Norfolk Navy yard and then Firestone Airwings.  Wayne would continue to work at Firestone doing machine repair for 46 years, retiring in 1989. 

 

Wayne belonged to many Masonic organizations including, Wayfarer Lodge, Yusef Kahn Grotto, Barberton Chapter Royal Arch, Bethany Commandery, and Tadmor Shrine.  He also belonged to several fraternal Organizations, his favorite being South Akron Orioles #167 where he would eventually be elected Supreme President.  Wayne was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying boating, camping, hunting, and fishing.

 

Along with his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his wives, Beverly and Edith; son, Mark Smith; brother, Hyman (Dorothy) Smith and sister, Velma (Fred) Toothman.  He is survived by his daughter, Margie Smith of Rootstown; sons, Jeff Smith of Sarasota, Florida, and Wayne (Angela) Smith of Barberton; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; as well as many caring nieces and nephews.

 

A private family interment has taken place at Woodmere Memorial Park in Huntington, West Virginia.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Wayne’s name to Akron F.O.P.A.
