Walter Blackie Obituary

Walter Blackie, 92, passed away September 10, 2018.  He was born July 20, 1926 in Akron to the late Walter P. and Nettie Iva Blackie. Walter attend East High School, served his country in the U.S. Army 8th Calvary in Japan and the Philippines during WWII.  He was a past member of St. Paul’s and St Andrew’s Episcopal Church, was instrumental in starting St Michael’s Episcopal Church in Uniontown and a member of New Life Episcopal Church.  Walter retired from IBEW Local 306 but held several other jobs over his life-time, such as, a newspaper carrier for the ABJ, Diebold, McNeil, and General Tire. 

 

Walter’s main love was his wife and family but he did enjoy boating, fishing and vacationing at Houghton Lake in Michigan.  Traveling, taking road trips, woodworking, car repair, building model airplanes.  He was known as “mister fix it”.  He liked his McDonald’s coffee with two creams.

 

Along with his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Blackie; granddaughter, Sharon Kehl; great granddaughter, Sophia Polacheck; son-in-law, Larry Strouble, sister and brother-in-law, Edna (Milton) Wroe.  He  is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Anna, whom he met while roller skating; sons, David and Gary Blackie; daughters, Pamela Strouble and Marlene (Don) Polacheck; grandchildren, Denise (Matthew) Fiegenschuh, Lisa (Rick) Ammon, Jennifer (Chad) Weaver, Christopher (Karyn) Polacheck, Kristina Polacheck, Lanier Blackie, McKinley Blackie, Gregory Blackie, Grayson Blackie, Josh Glassner and Gianna Glassner; great grandchildren Benjamin Fiegenschuh, Brooke Fiegenschuh, Cora Wines, Connor Wines, Christian Weaver, Ava Polacheck; daughter-in-law, Cathy Blackie-Glassner; brother-in-law and best friend John Lower; as well as many other family and friends.

 

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Pleasant View Care Center for the love and care they provided to Walter and the family.

 

A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 (SR 619) with Rev. Albert Jennings officiating.  Family and friends may call on Friday from 6 to 9 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Walter’s name to Meals On Wheels of Stark and Wayne Counties, 2363 Nave Road SE, Massillon Ohio 44646 or to Crossroads Hospice, Charitable Foundation 3743 Boettler Oaks Drive, STE E, Uniontown Ohio 44685.  To leave a special message online for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
