Victor L. Gainer

Victor Gainer, 96, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2018.  Vic, as he was lovingly known, was a lifelong resident of Akron. Born February 5, 1922, to the late Dee and Esta Gainer, he went on to proudly serve his country in the Navy during WWII before returning home with the love of his life, Frances, to start a family and begin his civilian career as an accountant. After retiring from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company following 45 years of dedicated service, he found great enjoyment in his second ‘career’ as a starter at Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Course for the next 20+ years. An avid sportsman who loved to cheer on the Indians, Cavs, Browns and Buckeyes, there was no better place for him to spend his golden years. Vic also gave generously of his time volunteering for various organizations, as he didn’t like to sit still for long!

He was incredibly fortunate to have been married to his beloved Frances for 67 years until her passing in 2011, at which time he moved to the Retirement Residence of Green. He made many wonderful friends both there and at Pebble Creek nursing facility, where he resided most recently. His charm, kindness and good nature endeared him to everyone he met throughout his life, and he will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As his daughter-in-law would always say, ‘The Vicker’ was truly one of a kind!

Along with his parents, Victor was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances; daughter, Vickie Gainer-Sabo; and sisters, Ruth and Helen.  He is survived by his son, Roger (Linda); grandchildren, Brian (Melissa), Tracy, Jeremy (Jacqueline) and Joseph (Lindsey); great grandchildren, Morgan, Cayden, Paisley, Kinley and Kole; sister-in-law, Joy; brother-in-law, Al (Marian); as well many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Per Victor’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time.  Memorial contributions may be made in Victor’s name to the Green Fire Department, 4200 Massillon Road, N.
