Sonya Barr Obituary

Sonya Barr, 43, passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous battle with cancer on November 20, 2021. She was born December 24, 1977 in Akron and was a 1996 graduate of Coventry High School. Sonya became a pharmacy technician and worked at Discount Drug Mart while putting herself through nursing school. After earning her nursing degree, Sonya was hired at Pebble Creek Skilled Nursing Facility in Akron. She was recognized for her dedication and strong leadership abilities and was soon promoted to Nurse Case Manager.

Beyond Sonya’s schooling and employment, her greatest success was in her home. She loved being a wife and a mother. One of her favorite past times was sitting on her front porch or having a fire in the backyard overlooking the gorgeous view behind her home. To know Sonya was to love her. She radiated pure, non-judgmental love to everyone she met. She was brilliant, beautiful and brave, but most of all she was humble and selfless. She could make anyone laugh and her beautiful smile will forever be etched in our memories. From the time she was a young child, Sonya loved to sing, and dance and she could silence a room with her beautiful voice. Sonya leaves her family and friends with a huge hole in their hearts. She had such an incredible light and love about her. The only consolation is knowing she is free of pain, and is now singing, (louder than anyone else, of course), with the angels.

In addition to her father, George W. Rager, Jr., Sonya was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Brian Arndt, Sr.  She is survived by her loving husband, Shawn Barr; sons, Jess Lee, II, Alex Lee and Mason (Courtney) Barr; daughters, Annabelle and Ashley Barr; mother, Suzanne Scully; mother and father-in-law, Margie and Pat Munson; brother, Tracey (Sherry) Rager; sisters, Nalana (Jeff) Kardos, Roxanne Arndt and Georganne Reeves; nieces, Ashley Rager, Amanda Rager, and Erica (David) Conti; nephews, Jacob Reeves, Dylan Reeves, Caleb Reeves and Brian Arndt Jr.; great nephew Jaden Hosey, best friend, Veronica Boggs; life- long friend, April Eldridge; Pebble Creek family, fur baby, Molly; as well as countless other friends.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Sonya’s Pebble Creek family for their exceptional care over the last month, as well as Elara Caring Hospice for the love and care they gave Sonya and our family in her final days.
