Shirley A. (Flickinger) Hyland

Shirley Ann Hyland, 90, passed away July 20, 2022, with her children at her bedside.  She was born on January 17, 1932, in Wooster to the late William and Helen Flickinger and raised in Cleveland.

In 1953, Shirley graduated as a registered nurse from the Nursing School of City Hospital in Cleveland.  Married in 1955, Shirley raised 5 children while continuing her career as a nurse.  She worked at several Akron area hospitals, eventually supervising intensive and critical care units. Shirley returned to school and graduated with her BSRN, from the University of Akron in 1983. When her youngest child graduated from high school, Shirley moved to South Carolina and earned her master’s in Family Health Nursing from Clemson University in 1987.  Shirley continued her nursing career at hospitals in the Carolinas until she retired at age 70.  Besides nursing, her passions were gardening and caring for her cats. In her later years, she returned to Akron to be closer to her family.

Shirley’s children are forever grateful for her love and strength and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.  Please help the family celebrate her life by treating yourself to ice cream – one of her favorite treats.

Along with her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Jesse Hammond.  She is survived by children, Susanne Wisor, Laura (Tom) Weber, Kevin (Gayle) Hyland, Michele Sollenberger, and Michael Hyland; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Wilma Ocvirak; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. 

The family would like to thank the Village of St. Edward (Fairlawn) for their many years of loving care and the St. Edward Hospice team for their compassionate care in her final months.

Mass of a Christian Burial will be held at NOON on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 1800 Steese Road, Uniontown, Ohio 44685 with Fr. David Durkee officiating.  Family and friends may call on Saturday from 11 A.M. until the time of the service at the church.  A private family inurnment will take place at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Shirley’s name to One of a Kind Pets Rescue, Inc. 1485 Marion Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44313, or to the BrightFocus Foundation, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, Maryland 20871.  To leave a special message for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
