Ruby C. (Mullins) Winter

Ruby Winter, 82, passed away on June 19, 2022. She was born November 24, 1939, in Woodbine, West Virginia to the late Curtis and Agnes Mullins, and was one of fourteen children.

Ruby was known and loved throughout the Portage Lakes area and beyond, and never met a stranger. She married the love of her life, Richard Winter in 1969, and their blended family became five: Ruby, Dick, Steve, Jan, and Becky.  They were blessed to live on the lake, boating, parties, and friends, all summer long.

Ruby taught third grade at Memorial Elementary in Barberton for thirty-four years and was adored by the children, parents, and staff.  Everyone who met her could see her spark of life, and she shared that spark happily.

Ruby was an avid and tireless volunteer, including the Akron Civic Theater, Friends of Children’s Hospital, AARP, Secret Sisters, and a multitude of charitable causes. As a former teacher, she made sure every task was handled with care and love.

Ruby loved to travel the world, she was adventurous and always ready for the next trip.  Vacations to the Outer Banks were full of sand, joy, and fun, as spending time at the beach with her family was her happy place.

Ruby was the best wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend anyone could ask for. She taught us love, grace, kindness, and patience, and she will be missed always.

Besides her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Dick” Winter; son, Steven Winter, and 13 siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Jan (Jack) Eshelman and Becky Doherty; daughter-in-law, Lisa Winter; grandchildren, Janae and Jacey Eshelman, Caitlin Doherty (Vito Spano), Ross Doherty, Andrew and Michael Winter; great grandchildren, Vito III, Giovanni, Kaden, and Kyler; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, June 24, 2022, at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 with Rev. Jim Gindlesberger officiating. Family and friends may call on Friday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made in Ruby’s name to Friends of Children’s Hospital, One Perkins Square, Akron, Ohio 44308.
