Grant Wilkins, 95, passed away December 28, 2020. He was born July 4, 1925 in Akron to the late Roy and Ethel Wilkins. Grant was a lifelong resident of the Akron area, a WWII veteran. He retired in 1982 from General Tire and he was a self-taught carpenter. Grant built and remodeled numerous houses over the course of several decades. Those projects included a family cottage on South Bass Island, as well as the house where he and his wife Kathleen lived and raised their two sons. An avid outdoorsman, Grant loved spending summers boating on Portage Lakes and Lake Erie as well as working in his vegetable garden.
Grant is survived by his best friend and wife of 74 years, Kathleen; sons, Rick (Evelyn) and Brian (Judy) Wilkins; grandchildren, Rachel (Darren) Pierce; Jennifer Wilkins and Alec Wilkins; great grandchildren, Grant and Micah Pierce. Besides his parents, Grant was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
A casual gathering of family and friends will be held from 11 A.M. to 12 P.M. on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 (SR619). A memorial service will be held at 12 P.M. with Pastor Sharon Bauman officiating. Social distancing and health protocol (i.e. wearing of face covering, staying 6 feet apart, no handshakes or hugs) will be followed while at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at East Liberty Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Grant’s name to the Millheim United Church of Christ, 2260 Myersville Road, Akron, Ohio 44312.
