Nick Spada, 88, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2021 to be with his beloved wife "Gracie". He was born on March 20, 1933 in Akron to the late Dominic and Margaret (Comeriato) Spada.
Nick grew up on North Hill and graduated from North High School. As a young person he worked in the family grocery store. Nick was an avid football fan. He played Bantam football in his youth and for North High School as a teen. Local papers referred to Nick and Bob Wallace as the touchdown twins. In later years he was a co-founder of Green Pee Wee Football, part of the Suburban League, with his friend Hank Wilmer, and was a coach for his sons who won Championships during those years. He was instrumental in securing playing fields on Greensburg Road, which remain.
After high school Nick married his high school sweetheart and joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Baltimore MD as an airman first class and a mechanic on the B25 aircraft during the Korean War. After the military he and Gracie and their 2 daughters moved back to Akron, where he built a home in Green and he worked as a draftsman at Firestone Rubber Co. He retired from General Tire as a construction project manager.
Nick always had a new adventure.... he took up golf and made a hole in one, he bought a motorcycle and rode for a couple of years, he then became a pilot and flew small aircraft, until Gracie made him give it up. He traveled for work and after retirement traveled to Europe. But his greatest joy was building a pool and having big family parties. The more, the merrier. If you weren't there every day, he would call and find out when you were coming.
In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gracie; brother, Leonard and grandson Paul Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Margie (Dave) Mucklow, Mary Jane (Steve) Nelson; sons, Frank (Kelli) and John (Stephanie) Spada; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Mary and Adelaide; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.
