Joyce (Paolino) Adley Obituary

Joyce Adley, 90, passed away on February 4, 2024.  She was born on May 19, 1933, to the late Fred and Margaret Crano.  Joyce was born and raised in Akron for most of her childhood, later moving with her family to Phoenix, AZ where she met the love of her life, husband of 51 years, Fritz Paolino.  Once married, they moved to PA for a short time then back to Akron where they raised their 5 children.  They moved from house to house as the family grew, Dad making renovations and Mom always decorating the inside and out to make the house a beautiful home.  She was employed in retail in women’s clothing and fine jewelry.  She also ran an invitation business out of the home for several years.

It had always been Joyce’s dream to own and run a B&B, which came true in 1989.  Mom and Dad bought a renovated turn-of-the-century Victorian home in Atwater, turning it into a beautiful “Painted Lady” and running it as “The Buckeye Lady Bed & Breakfast” from 1991 to 1995.  Joyce had a green thumb and her flower beds were beautifully designed.  Mom was a wonderful and welcoming hostess to the guests, cooking delicious breakfasts and listening to the guest’s life stories.  One guest said it best, “I’ve seldom felt so welcome anywhere- delightful in every way.”  She was passionate about everything she did, she loved antiques and decorated every room in the B&B with a specific theme from the Victorian era.

Joyce and Fritz moved from Atwater to Hartville renovating another turn-of-the-century home and planting a beautiful secret flower garden in the back which they enjoyed and cared for together until Dad’s passing in 2004.  Mom loved to cook, craft, decorate, and read and had a huge library with hundreds of books.  She loved family gatherings, was intrigued by Queen Elizabeth II, and was a big fan of John Travolta and LeBron James.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz Paolino; granddaughter, Nicole Happoldt; daughter-in-law, Kim Paolino; son-in-law, Mark Ashburn and second husband, William Adley.  She is survived by her daughters, Shelley (John) Dargie and Dee Ashburn; sons, Mark (Renee), Ted (Jamie), and Matt (Christie) Paolino; sister, Mickey (Cosimo) Tassone; brothers, Bill (Sue) and Rick (Diane) Crano; grandchildren, Kurt (Tara) Buchtel, Anthony (Caressa) Paolino, Ashleigh Paolino; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Joyce was a loving, caring, generous, and devoted mom and grandma.  She had a happy demeanor, always smiling even in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease.  Our family was fortunate to have a 90th birthday party for her that brought her much happiness.  She will be missed dearly by her family and all who knew her.

Per Joyce’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Joyce’s name to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater East Ohio Chapter, 23215 Commerce Park, STE 300, Beachwood, Ohio 44122.  To leave a special message for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
