Jean J. (Cross) Theiss

Jean Theiss, 90, passed away November 24, 2021.  She was born September 3, 1931 in Stow to the late Arlie and Marie Cross.  Jean was a 1949 graduate of Stow High School where she was the Homecoming Queen, cheerleader, secretary and treasurer (which continued for many years).

Jean’s priorities were her faith, her family, her friends from high school, her sister Arleen and serving others, especially those at her Parish of St. Francis de Sales since 1967 and the men at the IBH in Akron.  She was a loyal and passionate Brown’s Backer since 1985, Bernie Kosar’s rookie year. Jean loved attending many games in the dog pound.

Jean managed Art’s Place Restaurant from 1971 until retirement in 1996.  She was President of the Akron Restaurant Association for many years.  After retirement, Jean was the manager of Bailey’s Restaurant of Portage Lakes for a few years. 

Most of all Jean sacrificially loved and served her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who brought her much joy.  She had such a willing, peaceful, serving spirit that lives on as her legacy in all her off-spring.  Jean attended mass and prayed daily for all her family.  She loved God most of all.

Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her siblings, Edwin, Homer, Robert and Genevieve and spouse of 48 years, Roger.  She is survived by her sons, Greg and Craig Theiss; daughters, Julie (Jim) Russell, Amanda (Dale) Daugherty, Susan (Doug) Dangerfield, Valerie Byers, Mary (John) Pegley and Jackie (Russell) West; grandchildren, Lee Theiss, Carter Theiss, Joseph (Brenda) Russell, Anthony Russell, Jimmy Russell, Maria (Tanner) Hall, Ryan Riggs, Angela (Shawn) Rohr, Damian (Brooke) Theiss, Mike Genda, Tom Genda, Jamie (Chason) Beard, Joshua (Phoebe) Byers, Rachel (Justin) Rector, Dominic Pegley, Sophia Pegley, Miranda (Chris) McQuistion, Marisa West, Myra West and Macallister “Mac” West; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Arleen Shuman.

Mass of a Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at St. Francis de Sales, 4019 Manchester Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 with Fr. Jeremy Merzweiler and Fr. Louis Thomas officiating.  Family and friends may call on Tuesday for one hour prior to the mass at the church which is 10 A.M.  Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.  Memorial contributions can be made in Jean’s name to the Humane Society of Summit County, 7996 Darrow Road, STE 30, Twinsburg, Ohio 44087 or to the Interval Brotherhood Home, 3445 S.
