Janice N. Flaherty Obituary

Our True Lady of Valor, Terri Flaherty, joined the ANGELS of CHRIST on December 1, 2023, after a most eventful, memorable, and valiant life of service, commitment, and sacrifice to ALL she loved and came in contact with during her time with us.

Born to Harry and Olive Mae Toot in Englewood New Jersey, while her father was serving in the Middle East during World War II. Terri and her family lived and grew up in Columbiana, Ohio where she experienced a most challenging life after the death of her dad, when she was but nine years old.  Terri and her brother Arthur with younger siblings, Dorlene “Dar” and Norman, worked the family farm while their mother returned to teaching third grade in the Columbiana School System.  Terri even did washing/ironing for the neighbors to help Mom and the family economics.

While at Columbiana High School, Class of 1961, Terri was a cheerleader, class officer, ladies’ basketball player, ladies’ tennis player, lifeguard, swimming instructor, and swim coach through graduation.

She enrolled at KSU-Kent for a BA-Edu degree in the Fall of 1961.  This is when she selected “Terri’’ as her preferred name as there were too many Jan’s in the dorm.  We are SURE that her new initials, “T.N.T.” had NOTHING to do with her new name preference.

After graduating from KSU and a year and a half teaching 3rd grade, Terri became a hair stylist/platform artist, until she met her husband-to-be, Bob Flaherty, in the summer of 1965.  They married on August 21, 1966, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Akron and lived in Portage Lakes through the birth of Kirsten and Sean, moving to Manchester in 1972 shortly before the arrival of Michael.

Terri chose to be a “stay-at-home” mother, house ruler, and Teacher for her children and others in the neighborhood.  She was always ready and willing to sacrifice time and energy to help others in need. Terri was an ACTIVE parent and served in various school committees as well as being selected as Nolley PTA president, Nimisila PTA president, and Manchester High School PTA president while her children attended. She was a charter member of the Tudor House restoration team and in her ‘’spare time” devoted countless hours to leading swimming and fitness training programs in Barberton, Manchester, and Canal Fulton.

Terri was an active member of Al-Anon for over forty years, devoted to working with and helping family members of practicing/recovering Alcoholics after her "Personal Journey" in helping her husband acquire sobriety and a new way of life.

Terri was a practicing Christian, who gave herself to Jesus Christ at an early age.  Even with all the trials and tribulations encountered during her life, she remained true to Jesus and continued to grow as a Lady of Virtue, expanding her knowledge and faith, while becoming an extraordinary positive example, with whom all she came in contact, as to how to live a true “Christ Like Life”.

Ever the athlete, who grew up playing football with her brother and the boys in her neighborhood.  Terri remained athletic and besides fitness training was an avid tennis player, swimming instructor, gymnast, ladies’ soccer player, and children’s soccer coach.  She was a positive example of health and beauty for all she came in contact with.

Terri enjoyed traveling and besides six journeys to Hawaii, she also visited Acapulco, Paris, and the Loire Valley, Western Ireland, as well as numerous in-state trips to Florida, DC, New York, Vermont, Maryland, and Virginia with family and friends.

Her “LEGACY” includes her children, Kirsten (Richard) Murphy, Sean and Michael (Maria)Flaherty; grandchildren, Jessica Horsfall, Jennifer Grandt, Daniel (Diane) Murphy, Justin (Alyssa) Murphy, Thomas (Evangeline) Flaherty; great-grandchildren, Avery, Jude, Layla and Kayden Horsfall, Chase, Xander, Ember, Reid, and Rowan Grandt, and Asher and Amylia Murphy, ALL of whom she Loves most DEARLY and REJOICES in their continuing JOY.

Terri was a beautiful, awesome, intelligent, loving, creative, sometimes “ornery and stubborn” lady, who while she did not suffer fools well, did try to listen and learn, as well as comprehend the GOOD in all those she came into contact with.  Her Spirit touched and filled countless hearts and minds with her wisdom and compassion. Terri fought the good fight and she finished the race” until the Creator Father Lord called her to the Angelic Host with all the Saints, Prophets, and Apostles she studied and patterned her life after during her time here in the Pre-School for Eternity.

May the Lord Bless You and Keep You Terri.  May He Make His Face Shine upon You and be Gracious unto You Terri.  May He Lift His Countenance Upon You Terri.  In the Name of the FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRT!
