Gregory Young Obituary

Greg Young, 73, of Hudson, passed away on May 13, 2022, while hospitalized with heart complications.  He was born in Beech Grove, Indiana to the late Robert and Betty Young.

Greg grew up in Indianapolis where he graduated from Arsenal Technical High School as a member of the ROTC program. Greg received a BS in Psychology from Purdue University, as well as an MS from the Krannert School of Management. He also spent six years as a Navy officer in air operations and flight control, an intelligence officer, a squadron staff officer, and performing surface and submarine warfare.  He was also trained as a Navy pilot.

He spent his business career at Roadway Express in Akron, OH.  He worked in several departments on many key processes including Operations Information Systems (R2D2 development, a rating system), Operations Planning (Challenge2000), TQM (Malcolm Baldrige team leader and developed the internal Galen Roush Award), and Corporate Strategy & Planning (where he developed a company-wide injury prevention process saving the company millions.) He was regarded as the intelligent level-headed process improvement guru.  He had a knack for taking very complicated subjects, researching them, dissecting the pieces, and presenting the changes in simple terms, making him the go-to guy.  He pulled together presentations for Wall Street and the officer team.  He retired from Roadway/YRC after 27 years of service.

In retirement, he enjoyed reading, researching, and sharing his acquired knowledge.  He did pro-bono work for SAGE Community, a premier non-profit, Lifelong Learning Program. He assisted with the administration, and he also facilitated several courses on economics, capitalism, democracy, and many current event topics from each semester.  He was highly regarded by his students and colleagues.

When he wasn’t learning or teaching others, Greg enjoyed playing golf and visiting with friends, recounting stories from his Navy days, and educational travel. Greg loved spending time at home with his wife and daughter, as well as traveling to Arizona and Virginia to visit his children and grandchildren.

Greg is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Kimberly Butler Young; son, Brian (Jill) Young; daughters, Lindsey (Robert) Bogard and Kristen Young; grandchildren, Keegan, Madison, Kherington, and Emily; brothers, Scott and Martin (Lynne) Young; sister, Carol Young; mother of his older children, Mary Helen Young; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends and colleagues.

Godspeed and Fly High!
