Gene Blackburn, 88, passed away on September 21, 2021. He was born May 20, 1933 in Cottageville, West Virginia to the late Wade Everett and Hattie Blackburn.
Like a cat, it seemed as if Gene had nine lives. After battling Leukemia for 26 years, he was finally overcome by what seemed like sheer exhaustion, surrounded by his loving wife and children. He came to rest peacefully Tuesday knowing his family will be there for each other until they meet again.
Besides his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruby Blackburn and Ethel Pickins. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rosa May; sons, Jeff, Mark (Becky) and Brent (Babette “Babz”) Blackburn; daughter, Rosemary (Steve) Spinell; 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; sister, Opal Abbott; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
We appreciate beyond words the nurses and aids at Crossroads Hospice for always being such caring and wonderful caretakers. Gene was so fond of all of you.
Funeral service will be held at NOON on Monday, September 27, 2021 at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 with Pastor Steve Bucy officiating. Family and friends may call on Monday from 10 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
