Betty Burkins, 84, was born October 20, 1938, in Barberton, above a fish market on 2nd St., and passed away peacefully, on March 5, 2023, at The Village of St. Edward at Fairlawn.
Betty graduated in 1956 from the “one and only” Barberton High School, where she was a cheerleader and the Senior Queen. Betty was an accomplished "administrative assistant" during her working career, for such places as Chemstrand, General Tire, The Mayflower Hotel, and Charles Mayer Studios.
Betty was a longtime resident of Portage Lakes having enjoyed life on the lakes since 1969. She was a member of South Summit Democrats and for many years served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman. She also was selected Woman of the Year by the American Business Women’s Association. Betty volunteered at Meals on Wheels and Barberton Citizens Hospital. In her youth, Betty was a local model in many department store campaigns and an instructor at Charmette school. Betty was raised in a Hungarian household in Barberton and was very proud of her Hungarian ancestry.
Betty was a friend of Dr. Bob and Bill W for over 40 years, helping many people in her journey.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Velma Dormish; grandparents, Simon and Elizabeth Mocsary. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (James) Powley; grandsons, Michael and Joseph Raso; step-grandchildren, Robert Powley and Maria Healey; as well as many caring friends.
Per Betty's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023, from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Messiah Lutheran Church 4700 S Main Street, Akron, Ohio 44319. To leave a special message for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
