Eileen Snider, 91, formerly of Portage Lakes, passed away on February 16, 2022. She relocated in 2018 to Santa Barbara, California to be near her daughter, Kathy, and her family. Eileen was born June 24, 1930, in Akron to the late Elton and Rose Rex. She was the seventh daughter of eight girls and was a 1948 graduate of Coventry High School.
Eileen loved to bake, often sending her husband, Jim, to work at the fire station with her pies and cakes to feed the squad. She looked after her neighbors by taking them homemade meals and cakes. Eileen baked and decorated cakes for weddings, showers, holidays, and birthdays. She and her sister, Edna, would make homemade chocolates for Easter and Christmas.
Church was a very important aspect of Eileen’s life. She was involved at Turkeyfoot Evangelical Congregational Church where her brother-in-law was pastor. She sang in the choir and typed the Sunday bulletin. But most of all, she loved being a grandmother. Eileen and Jim would often travel to Santa Barbara, to visit her daughter and her family, later traveling with her daughter, Karen, and grandson, Erik. At the age of 81, Eileen was invited to a family trip with daughters, Karen, Kathy, and grandsons, Will and Erik, to Laramie River Dude Ranch. Her only remorse was, “She didn’t ride Jello faster”, she had spirit. Her daughter, Karen, would often take Eileen and her sister, Pauline, on long Sunday drives never knowing where they would end up for dinner.
Besides her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, James Snider; daughter, Karen Newman; sisters; Dorothy, Ruth, Elta, Edna, Esther, and Elizabeth “Betty”. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (William) Borgers; son, James Snider II; grandchildren; William (Sarah) and Krista Borgers and Erik Newman; great-granddaughter, Savannah Grace; sister, Pauline Phillips; as well many nieces and nephews.
