Dr. Philip Pinnow, O.D. Obituary

Phil Pinnow, 86, made his journey straight to Heaven’s doors from complications of Parkinson’s disease on April 27, 2023, in the comfort of his own home.  He was born in Cleveland on August 5, 1936, to the late Bruno and Louise Pinnow.

Phil was a 1954 graduate of Rhodes High School, attended Ohio University, and later The Ohio State University where he graduated in 1962, with a Doctor of Optometry.  Phil served in the U.S. Army as a Captain for 6 years as an eye doctor.  After the Army, he practiced for over 30 years at Sears Optical, Chapel Hill Mall.  Phil was a member of the Portage Lakes Kiwanis, Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association, and worshiped for many years at The Chapel in Green.

In 1968 Phil met Judith Battles, the love of his life, they soon married and started a wonderful family.  They raised 4 children together.  Don, Laura, Tim, and Jill.  Later the family grew as they welcomed 10 grandchildren.  An Amazing Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Phil loved his family the most.  He was selfless – always putting them first.  Phil’s dedication as an eye doctor helped provide a wonderful life on Portage Lakes for his entire family.  Boating, fireworks, water skiing, tubing, as well as many picnics and beautiful sunsets are just some of the ways that everyone enjoyed time with Grandpa Phil.

Phil was so much fun and had a fantastic sense of humor.  He had many interesting stories about his time spent in Korea and told many funny jokes.  Most of the time, he would be laughing so hard telling a joke you couldn’t even hear the punch line (although he usually messed that up anyhow). His laugh was contagious.  Phil marched to the beat of his own drummer.  Whether he was wearing a crazy hat, oversized sunglasses, or a florescent orange t-shirt and matching Crocs, you would always see him standing out from the crowd.  For us that were lucky enough to witness it, Phil was a fashion icon on Portage Lakes, the wilder the better.

It would be impossible to count the number of memories Grandpa Phil has created for everyone around him.  He was so much fun, a truly good man.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Judith; sons, Donald (Melanie) and Tim (Michelle) Pinnow; daughters, Laura (Rick) Wike and Jill (Joe) Goshe; grandchildren,  Brooke, Kaitlyn, Malori, Lexi, Krista, Calvin, Kelsi, Ginger, Chase, and Lilly; brother, Douglas (Joan) Pinnow; as well as many other loving family and friends.

Per Phil’s wishes a private family interment has taken place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, Phil would want you to enjoy a lake sunset, plant a tiger lily, or take a peaceful walk to get an ice cream cone in his honor.  To leave a special message for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
