Coralie Lautenschlager Pohl Obituary

Coralie Pohl, 89, of Canal Fulton, passed away on October 9, 2021. She was born on July 12, 1932 in Wakeman, Ohio to the late Robert and Corienne Gerber.

After graduating high school, Coralie went onto college at Baldwin Wallace University majoring in Art Education with a minor in French. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. At Baldwin Wallace, she met a special group of ladies and kept in touch throughout the years. They traveled together, met for lunches and sent special cards at Christmas. With the help of Coralie’s daughter, all four of them checked in on her up until the time of her death. These ladies were quite special to her. One of the ladies from her sorority, Joan Lautenschlager Lutz, introduced Coralie to her brother, Richard. Coralie and Richard married in 1954 and had two children; Ray and Cherie.

She began teaching Art in the Springfield School District, beginning at Lakemore & Sawyerwood, Milroy & Boyer, then finished her teaching career at Schrop Junior High. She was so proud of her art program, teaching 3-4 lessons at a time including pottery, the pottery wheel, jewelry making, watercolor and oil-based painting, and many others. Watercolor was her favorite. She spent a week painting with Leroy Cross, a famous whiskey painter.

Coralie did more than just teach; she touched the lives of the students. She loved the kids from the Sunshine Cottages. A couple of them spent a great deal of time at Coralie’s house on weekends and especially in the summer. The ornerier the kiddo, the more attached she was. Cherie is still friends with at least 3 of those ornery ones. She understands why her mom became so attached. With her mom’s help, Cherie became a teacher after her own children started school. While teaching, Cherie became attached to and loved that same kind of ornery student.

Coralie retired from Springfield Local Schools in 1989 but continued in the art field. She took lessons in colored pencil drawings. She loved creating new pictures with colored pencils even when struggling with dementia. Her artwork will be displayed at her visitation.

Besides her parents, Coralie was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Lautenschlager; second husband, Henry Pohl; brother Bobby Gerber; and Aunt Pauline Thomas. She is survived by her fur-baby, Chloe; daughter, Cherie (Dan) Syx; son, Ray Lautenschlager; grandchildren, Andy (Lindsay) Syx, Ashley Syx, and Kevin Lautenschlager; great granddaughters, Emma and Brooklynn Syx; daughter-in-law, Pamela Baylor; as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
