Charlie Gray, 80, passed away on April 24, 2022. He was born August 1, 1941, in Akron to the late Charles, Sr., and Evelyn Gray. Charlie was a 1959 graduate of Coventry High School where he excelled in sports and made the All-Metro Basketball team. His dream was to play professional baseball and even received a letter to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Charlie worked for Seiberling Tire & Rubber for 20 years until they closed their doors, he moved on to become the Plant Manager at A. Schulman and then retired from Georgia Pacific.
Charlie was a lifelong fan of Cleveland sports teams and even though he said many times, “I am done with professional sports,” it didn’t last long, as every Sunday he could be found watching the Browns games with his son. There are many stories to hear about his Saturday golf outings with his brother and friends. But most of all he loved his family and enjoyed spending quality time with each one of them.
Charlie always had a positive outlook on life and a smile on his face. If you asked him how he was doing his response would be “If I was doing any better there would be two of me.” We never really knew what that meant, just that he was good. When it came to gardening, Charlie had a true green thumb, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t grow or bring back to life.
Besides his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Janice, and son-in-law, Bob Cercone. He is survived by his son, Bob Gray; daughters, Pam Cercone, Cindy Gray, Cheryl King (Mike Wagner), and honorary daughter, Kelly Hoover; grandchildren, Anthony Cercone, Cailey (Josh) Murphy, Jenny (Chris) Liming; James and Jessie King; and great-grandson Eli Murphy; brother, David (Betty) Gray; sisters, Charlene Bradford and Denise (Barry) Rhodes; former wife and mother of his children, Donna Gray; companion, Phyllis Dempsey and her family; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
We will continue to keep his memory alive by sharing his many stories and shenanigans.
