Robert Schaal, M.D. Obituary

Bob Schaal, 49, passed away March 23, 2018.  He was born May 23, 1968 in Lackawanna, New York, the son of Rita (Conti) and the late Robert A. Schaal but grew up in the Boardman, Ohio. Bob graduated from Boardman High School where he excelled in the classroom and on the football field.

He continued his education at Baldwin-Wallace College and played football until a severe knee injury sidelined him his freshman year.  The subsequent surgery and care that he received led Bob to his professional calling. With a laser-like focus and determination, Bob decided to become a physician.  He achieved that goal when he graduated from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine in 1995.

Bob completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Akron City Hospital.  Once Bob made the decision to come to Akron, he never left – meeting his wife and raising four children here.  Many longtime friendships and business relationships were formed during this time.

Bob had numerous accomplishments during his professional career.  He was a founding partner of Inpatient Medical Services, which was one of the first Hospitalists companies in the United States. Additionally, he served as President, Vice-President, and Past President of Summa Medical Staff, Medical Staff Officer, Hospital Chief of Staff for Summa Health Systems Division as well as serving on numerous boards and committees.

Training future physicians was very important to Bob.  He was an assistant professor at NEOMED and received their Medical Student Instructor of the year award in 1998.  Bob also was the Director of the NEOMED fourth-year medical student hospitalist clerkship at Summa Health System.

As passionate as Bob was about his medical career, his true love was coaching his four boys and their friends in Green Bulldog Youth Football.  As successful as he was in his professional career, he achieved similar accomplishments coaching football.  Bob led the Green Bulldogs to multiple league championships, and had an even greater impact on his players’ lives.

Besides his mother, Rita and her husband, Dale Anderson, Bob is survived by his loving wife of sixteen years, Carla; sons, Jack, Nick, Mike and Luke; sisters, Kathy (Mark) Griffin and Sue (Derek) Cantor; many nieces and nephews; as well as many other loving family and lifelong friends.

The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to Summa Home Health Hospice team.
