Mary Lou Williams, 92, passed away on April 3, 2024. She was born in Akron on July 3, 1931, to the late John and Mary (Muntzing) Slawter. She married Jerry Williams on June 6, 1954. They were blessed with four children. Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the focus and joy of her life as a homemaker. Her family will be eternally grateful for the countless hours of her love, care, concern, and prayers for them and all in need. She was truly a prayer warrior.
Many family members and friends who grew up helping with day-to-day farm chores have long forgotten the hard work and low pay, but they still can taste and smell the home-cooked meals filled with love, which Mary Lou prepared, often with very short notice. Her gift of hospitality bore fruit to several generations.
She was an avid, lifelong student of the Bible. Her faith was based on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. This was demonstrated by many years of active participation in her church, church council, and Bible study.
Being born and raised on Massillon Road in Greensburg and graduating from Greensburg High School gave Mary Lou a knowledge and passion for the families and history of the Green Community. At the request of the City of Green, she was asked to serve on the Green Historical Commission. Her years of participation on the historical commission helped to preserve the Southgate Farm, Lichtenwalter Schoolhouse, and her pride and joy, the East Liberty Schoolhouse.
Along with her parents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Williams, and sisters, Lois Witsaman and Carol Kramer. She is survived by her sons, Jeff (Debra), Jon (Rebecca), James (Shelia) Williams; daughter, Christine Via; grandchildren, Claire (Brandon) Green, Chloe (Malchi Lyon) Williams, Jon (Amber Webb) Williams, Jordan (Kelsey Markham) Williams, Hannah (Chisum) Grund, Drew (Melissa) Kasselder, Damon (Kelsie) Kasselder, Alisha Fleer, Kyle, Aaron, and Rachel Via; 8 great-grand children with number 9 on the way; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 P.M. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 with Pastors Chuck and Debbie Brown officiating. Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 11 A.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home. The interment will take place following the service at Greensburg Cemetery.
