Ora "Orie" P. Barnett

Orie Barnett, 95, of Portage Lakes went home peacefully on August 20, 2017, with his family by his side.

Dad's mission in life was to lookout for and love his family. He was known for his kindness that he shared with everyone he met. He was a devoted member of Lakeview Christian Church. Orie was proud to serve his country and community.  During World War II he built Liberty Ships and after that he served as the Coventry Township Fire Department Captain. He was a master mechanic retiring as Northeastern Ohio, Fleet Manager, for the 7-up Corporation.

In his retirement, Orie remained very active, enjoying his Ham Radio, communicating with people all over the world. He also enjoyed building and flying radio control planes and was a member of the Barnstormers and Goodyear Model Clubs.  You could find Dad riding his motorcycle on sunny afternoons until he was 90 years old, often stopping in to check on his loved ones. Orie was a devoted husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and great-great grandpa. Dad's final years were spent at Pleasant Point and Pleasant View in Barberton where he was very pleased with the all love and care he received from the staff and Hospice. The family is very thankful for this.

Orie was preceded in death by his wife, of 68 years, Evelyn; daughter, Lois Norris and grandson, Dennis Barnett.  He is survived by sons, Lynn Barnett and James (Sydney) Barnett; son-in-law, Gary Norris; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 10 great- great grandchildren.

A graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Lockwood Cemetery, 3630 Manchester Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 with long-time friend Rev. William Browne officiating. To leave a special message online for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
