Mary Marmaduke, 86, passed away February 25, 2018. She was born August 17, 1931 in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee to the late Jim and Maggie Adams. Mary was a graduate of Trigg County High School in Cadiz, Kentucky. She was a member of the Ohio State Teachers Association, a lifetime member of the Forest L. Good Post 3458 Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Ohio Bowler’s Association, and a lifetime member of Miller Avenue United Church of Christ. Mary served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, youth director, deaconess, and consistory member. Her hobbies were bowling, walking and gardening.
Mary’s defining role was teaching and nurturing children. Her mentoring skills developed at a young age while attending school in Kentucky. As a young mother, she volunteered at Lincoln Elementary school. She became the PTA President which led to a teacher’s aide internship, then was awarded a full scholarship to attend The University of Akron where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education. Mary taught at various elementary schools, with the majority of her career teaching kindergarten at Margaret Park. She touched and molded many children’s lives.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert Marmaduke, I; daughter, Sandra Marmaduke; grandson, Christopher Steiner; brother, Ben Adams; sisters, Gena Martin, Mallie Morris, and Jimmie Woody. She is survived by her children, Robert (Patricia) Marmaduke, II, Susan (Christian) Steiner, Katherine (Keith) Buckley, and Donald (Sherry) Marmaduke; grandchildren, Aaron (Emily), Kyle (Sara Gilliland), Alex, Rachel (Andy), Andrew, Melissa (Jay), Sandra and Anna; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Damian, Aubrey, Ava, Edwin, Riley, and Marin; brothers, Bobby (Pat) and Dale (Sandy) Adams; sisters, Clara Carr, Norma (Ronnie) Swank, Carolyn (Don) Harrison and Patricia (Robert) Oberbillig; brother-in-law, Richard Marmaduke; a host of nieces and nephews; and beloved family friend, Vanessa Boring and her family.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who loved and took great care of Mary in her final years.
Funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, March 2, 2018 at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. (SR619), Akron, Ohio 44319. Family and friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
