James "Jimmy" Bock

Jimmy Bock, 52, a fixture in the Portage Lakes area, passed away January 31, 2017, losing a life-long battle with alcohol addiction.  Jimmy grew up in the Portage Lakes and moved to West Akron for his senior year in high school to swim for Firestone High.  They won the state swim championship that year and Jimmy has remained friends with many of those swimmers since.  He graduated from Firestone in 1982 and then went to The University of Akron on a swimming scholarship.  He graduated from the University in 1987 with a degree in communications.           

He returned to the Portage Lakes after high school and settled in.  He began a small business, “The Lawn Ranger” and did lawn maintenance for many years.  He then worked at Meggitt International for several years.

Jimmy is survived by his mother and step-father, Peggy and Frank Weaver Jr. of Portage Lakes; father and step-mother, Bill and Barbara Bock of West Akron; children, Morgan and Mitchell Bock, former wife, Tona Bock, all of Manchester; sister, Wendy (Bobby) Wilson of Portage Lakes; brother, Dan (Kate) Bock of Napa California; step-brothers, Jack (Valerie) Wright of Fairlawn, David Wright of Hudson and step-sister, Mary Lohr of Akron; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.                

Memorial service will be held at 6 P.M. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. (SR619), Akron, Ohio 44319 with Dr. Mark Ruppert officiating.  Family and friends may call on Saturday from 2 P.M. until the time of the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jimmy’s name to Portage Lakes Fireworks Association, P O Box 26923, Akron, Ohio 44319 or to Humane Society of Summit County, 7996 Darrow Road #30, Twinsburg, Ohio 44087.  To leave a special message online for the family, visit our website at www.schermesserfh.com.
