Gary D. Norris

Gary Norris, 81, of Portage Lakes, went home to be with the Lord on Christmas Day 2017. He was born May 26, 1936 in Akron to the late Richard and Norma “Billie” Norris.  Gary was a 1954 graduate of Coventry High School.  He worked alongside his family at Norris Tire & Battery until the sale to Seiberling Tire.  Throughout his life, Gary worked for Reiter Dairy, O’Neil’s Department Store and retired from Kent State University.  During his career Gary also served the community of Coventry Township as a fireman also serving as past president of the Coventry Firefighters Association.  Gary was very active in Coventry Youth Football.  He was a 60-year member of Lakeview Christian Church and served as a Deacon. Gary loved the Portage Lakes, he enjoyed boating, fishing water skiing and spending time with his family on the water. 

Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Norris.  He is survived by children, Deb Willis, Pamela (Bob) Hinton, Laurie Jones and Jamie (Jody) Norris; grandchildren, Melissa Willis, David (Angela) Willis, Ben (Rachel) Willis, Rob (Jackie) Hinton, Gary (Rachel) Hinton, Christopher (Jennifer) Jones, Cayla Jones, Ashley, Molly and Katie Norris; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Jim and Lynn Barnett; special friend, Brian Martin; devoted companion, Zeus; and many other loving family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Lakeview Christian Church, 4613 S. Main Street, Akron, Ohio 44319 with Pastor Darryl Moulder officiating. Family and friends may call on Thursday 4 to 8 P.M. at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 or for one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be at Lockwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s name to Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation, Rheumatology Fund, One Perkins Square, Akron, Ohio 44308-1062.
